Muscle responds to stimulus, not just load. You can create that stimulus through time under tension, slow tempo, isometric holds, adjusting sets & reps, range of motion, and pushing a muscle to true fatigue.
Progressive overload is primarily a strategy for building larger and larger muscle. If that’s not your goal, constantly lifting heavier isn’t necessary.
You can build strength, muscle, endurance, and change your body composition without maxing out weights—by keeping the muscle working long enough and hard enough to adapt.
If heavy weights aren’t sustainable, enjoyable, or realistic for you, that doesn’t mean your workouts are ineffective.
