I’ve been thinking a lot about the vitriol we’ve been seeing from parts of the heavy lifting community toward Pilates.
The more I’ve sat with it, the more I wonder if it isn’t really about Pilates at all.
I wonder if, for some women, Pilates has become a symbol of something much deeper. For years, many women were told they needed to be smaller, thinner, and take up less space. Those messages were damaging, and if Pilates has become associated with those experiences, I can understand why it brings up such strong emotions.
Honestly, thinking about it that way has given me a little more compassion.
At the same time, I hope we don’t lose sight of what Pilates actually is.
Pilates isn’t a body type. It’s not reserved for thin women. It isn’t a club for people trying to get smaller. It’s simply a form of movement that helps people build strength, mobility, stability, endurance, and confidence—and it’s for every body.
My hope is that women who promote heavy lifting can continue sharing everything they love about it without the hatred or venom toward a form of movement that is also incredibly effective and deeply loved by millions of people.
There’s room for all of it. 🤍
...
